Over the past decade, there have been growing claims of some nutritional supplements helping in the prevention of a number of diseases affecting the eyes. Nonetheless, some of such claims are deemed irrelevant by various studies. Other studies have again proved that certain eye vitamin supplements may actually be beneficial to individuals highly predisposed to eye diseases.

Usually, these studies often revolve around age-related macular degeneration or AMD, a leading cause of vision loss. AMD is actually a serious problem because over one million people are thought to have the advanced form of the condition, and about 8 millions are estimated to be at a higher risk. However, some studies indicate that taking supplements that are rich in the eye vitamins can minimize the likelihood of vision loss due to AMD.

However, it is important to realize that these improvers are not the solution or magic bullets for your eye health. The reason for this is because there lack evidence suggesting that the nutritional improvers prevent AMD in people without vision problems. Usually, many eye health experts recommend these add-ons to those already with some types of vision related problems. For example, some improvers are more beneficial to people with the dry AMD that is less severe because its progression is slow, compared to the more severe wet AMD.

On the other hand, these improvers do not cure all eye problems. For instance, some supplements are only recommended after an eye exam reveals drusen or yellow spots which is a sign of AMD. This is because, the supplement will only work if you have the yellow spots, and you must be at that stage.

Usually, the most common nutrient found in many eye health supplements are the antioxidants. This is because oxidative stress, which a damaging effect of toxins and the reactive oxygen is usually implicated in AMD, as well as in many age-related diseases and the aging process. The antioxidants are thought to slow the rate of progression of loss of vision.

Nevertheless, the health of the eyes is not simply about the pills. Actually, the antioxidants found in this improvers are also found in the body naturally and in other types of foods. Some researches, however, suggest that taking green leafy vegetables minimizes the risk of vision loss. At the same time, the antioxidants in foods are even numerous than the one in an individual supplement. Also, the body processes the nutrient much easier in food than when it is taken as a supplement.

Again, it remains unclear if the intake of large antioxidant doses remains beneficial. This notwithstanding, it is highly encouraged that only small doses are taken. This is since the body will only be able to utilize some specified amounts of this nutrient. Higher doses may however never hurt you.

Essentially, eye vitamins are crucial for maintaining eye health. These vitamins for the eyes are also important in preventing other diseases. Although they may be obtained by taking certain food, these foods may be difficult to get especially in this times of fast food whereby getting a good healthy meal may be almost impossible. Due to this, vitamin supplements become very essentials.
